WPAFB details sequester cuts

Following Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's announcement that civilian furloughs have been reduced from 14 days to 11, officials at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton are outlining their plans for dealing with sequester cuts.

In the repository or "Room of Drums" at Wright Patterson Air Force Base 55 gallon barrels of fuel from all over the world are stored. There are liquid fuels made of coal from South Africa. There's also one made from camelina, a weed. Others come from animal fat.

Alternative fuel is playing an even bigger role in the U.S. government’s aviation plan. Within the next year the latest National Aeronautics Research and Development Plan will be released and a large portion of it focuses on alternative fuels. Wright Patterson Air Force Base is playing a leading role, in part because it can moderately scale up lab production for commercial companies. WVXU's Ann Thompson took a tour to see how it's made, where it's tested and what unusual samples the Air Force is storing. She reports in "Focus on Technology."

Wright-Patt considering major cuts

Officials at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton say that under guidance from the Department of Defense, they have begun planning for a potential 15 percent of their operating budget reduction as a result of sequestration.

Col. Cassie Barlow says a furlough of civilian employees isn’t out of the question but it would be a last resort.

Dayton man says 'thanks' with cherry trees

On the 100th anniversary of Japan's gifting of cherry trees to the United States as a sign of friendship, a Japanese businessman is recreating the gesture.

Alex Hara is vice president of commercial banking for JPMorgan Chase & Co. Hara was so moved by the U.S. and U.S. military response to the 2011 Japanese tsunami, he's spearheading the planting of 1,000 cherry trees across the Dayton region. It's called Operation 1000 Cherry Tree Project.
