Ishinomaki residents are still suffering


For the last two years children in Ishinomaki, Japan have had few places to play. When the tsunami hit in March 2011 waves reached 33 ft. high, killing 3,000 people, destroying 20,000 homes and forcing many of the city's residents to live in shelters, even today, as reported here in The Daily Beast.

GOP donors find a candidate, and he's a Democrat

Poor old Cincinnati Republicans.


They don’t have a mayoral candidate of their own.


There’s John Cranley, Democrat. Roxanne Qualls, Democrat. Jim Berns, Libertarian. And probably a couple more before the June 27 filing deadline for the September 10 mayoral primary.


But nary a Republican.

Quinlivan shrugs shoulders over AFL-CIO snub

The Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Council has endorsed for re-election all the Democratic incumbents on Cincinnati City Council except one - Laure Quinlivan.

Quinlivan is convinced it is because she ran afoul of Firefighters Union Local 48 in the recent debate over the city budget, where she argued that police and fire services should be subject to the same kind of budget-cutting as other city services; and suggested that police and firefighters should be paying more for their health insurance coverage.

After 24 years and tons of trash, River Sweep still going strong

About 20,000 volunteers help out each year with River Sweep, which covers six states on the Ohio River.

HollNearly a quarter century after it began, the massive cleanup effort along the banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries still draws tens of thousands of volunteers.  They'll be combing more than 3,000 miles of shoreline, picking up trash and debris for River Sweep on June 15. 

Jeanne Ison with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, the sponsoring organization for River Sweep, said the event has been very effective since its inception.

Cincinnati selects site for new District 3 building

Cincinnati's city manager said the new location for Police District 3 will be at 2300 Ferguson Road in Westwood.  

Milton Dohoney said in a press release Thursday the site was selected because it's located in one of three high-call neighborhoods, it's available for development, it rated high on constructability and it provides physical accessibility for service to the 14-neighborhoods in District 3.  

The city is paying $325,000 for the site.
