Hamilton County recycling up a storm

Mariemont, Madeira and Wyoming led the way as Hamilton County recycled nearly 41 tons of metal, glass, plastic and paper last year.

That's an average of 245 pounds per household.

Rounding out the top ten were Montgomery, Glendale, Terrace Park, Amberley Village, Indian Hill, Evendale and Blue Ash.

Procter & Gamble selling pet food business

Procter and Gamble says Mars Incorporated has agreed to buy the IAMS, EUKANUBA, and NATURA brands for $2.9 billion in cash.

A release  says the companies expect to complete the transaction in the second half of 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.  Mars currently owns  PEDIGREE, WHISKAS, BANFIELD, and ROYAL CANIN.

Mars Petcare Global President, Todd Lachman, said: “We view the addition of the IAMS, EUKANUBA, and NATURA brands as exceptionally strategic. This acquisition is a perfect fit with our Mars Petcare vision of making  a better world for pets."

Procter & Gamble sets new goals on palm oil

Procter & Gamble says it's committing to no deforestation in its palm oil supply chain.  The Cincinnati-based consumer products company says it's going to improve its practices with all its suppliers, including small local farmers, to ensure protection of forests.  

Greenpeace activists staged several protests last month around the world, including one at the company's downtown headquarters. They said P&G used palm oil from a supplier tied to tropical forest destruction.

I-71/MLK interchange work to begin this summer

Construction of the I-71/Martin Luther King Drive interchange is expected to begin in July.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says Westerville, Ohio-based Kokosing Construction is the apparent low bidder to do the work. The company's bid comes in at $80.8 million.

The reconstruction will create full access to and from the interstate from Martin Luther King Drive.

Judge Tracie Hunter going to trial in September

A trial date of September 8 was set this morning for Hamilton Juvenile Court judge Tracie Hunter, who faces nine criminal charges.

Hunter's lawyer and the independent council chosen to prosecute her case met for 15 minutes this morning in the chambers of Common Pleas Court Judge Norbert Nadel.

After closed-door session, Nadel announced from the bench that there would be a hearing on motions in Hunter's case on June 5t, followed by the Sept. 8 trial.
