American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, is a cooperative project of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and CET, and WVXU has partnered with them to help bring additional light to the high school drop-out problem. This month, Mark Perzel interviews Dr. Anthony Smith, assistant superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, who discusses the challenges of assessing the actual drop-out rates and some of the innovative approaches CPS is taking to better serve the needs of the students in order to keep them successfully enrolled through graduation.

Former Cincinnati Post sports reporter Josh Katzowitz, now with CBSSports.com, has written a fascinating book about one of the most innovative minds in the history of pro football, Sid Gillman. The dynamic, passing offenses we’ve become accustomed to in the current NFL all originated with Gillman, though he never wanted to take the time to write them down. Josh Katzowitz is in The Front Row with Betsy Ross to talk about Sid Gillman: Father of the Passing Game.

In many dishes, it’s the sauce that seals the flavor deal, but oftentimes, making the sauces can be an intimidating process. That was until now. Martha Holmberg, a La Varenne-trained, award winning food writer has just released Modern Sauces: More than 150 Recipes for Every Cook, Every Day. Mark Perzel talks with the author about the range of recipes in her book, from the well-known marinara and hollandaise, to the more adventurous maple-rum sabyon and coconut-curry spiked chocolate sauce.

As 2012 comes to a close, it’s time for a review of some of the year’s top local business stories. Jamie Smith, editor of the Cincinnati Business Courier, is On the Money with Chris DeSimio to take a look back at some of the stories and people who stood out this year, and perhaps give a few hints as to what to look forward to in 2013.
