Avondale targeted as first site to improve low birth rates

The launch of the StartStong initiative is the pilot for what may become a national model to lower pre-mature birthrates.

StartStrong is a geographically focused initiative to redesign healthcare delivery and reduce preterm birth rates. The program launched Tuesday evening, March 11 at Avondale Southern Baptist Church and is open to the public.

Poll worker voted twice in November, board of elections says

A poll worker at an Avondale polling place who is alleged to have voted twice last in November’s election has been referred to the Hamilton County prosecutor for possible prosecution.

The county board of elections – two Democrats and two Republicans - voted unanimously Tuesday to send the case of veteran poll worker Ellen Duncan of Avondale to the prosecutor.

Cincy Council may "unsupport" Avondale housing project

Cincinnati Council could vote Wednesday to withdraw support for a controversial housing project in Avondale.  National Church Residences wants to build up to 100 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless and disabled individuals. 

City Council approved a resolution in February supporting the group's effort to get low income housing tax credits from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency.  Those credits have since been approved.

Cincy council delays vote on opposing Section 8 sale in Avondale

Cincinnati officials and Avondale residents will likely have a chance to meet next week with the firm that wants to buy nearly 750 units of HUD-supported Section 8 housing in the neighborhood.  

City Council was scheduled to vote Tuesday on a resolution opposing the sale.  But the item was held because of the planned meeting.

Cincinnati police investigate officer involved shooting

Cincinnati Police are continuing an investigation after an officer shot and killed a suspect Wednesday evening in Avondale. 

Channel 9 WCPO reported the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. at Reading Road and Burton Avenue.

Police were reportedly doing an undercover drug bust when they think the suspects caught on to the situation.  The suspects and the officer began to exchange gun fire.

Channel 9 reported officials said one suspect died and the other is recovering from non life-threatening injuries at University Hospital.
