Opening Day: A celebration of baseball

Somewhere in Great American Ball Park today, there will be many a little boy or little girl, dressed in red from head to toe, bundled up in Reds blanket, watching in awe at his or her first Opening Day.
 

Seeing their heroes play on the green grass – Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce and the rest.
 

They will be sitting next to a mother or father, who had their own childhood heroes – the wire-to-wire, World Series champion Reds – thinking of their own childhood heroes – Barry Larkin, Eric Davis, Chris Sabo.

Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum

With Opening Day on Monday, visitors to Great American Ball Park should also plan time to check out some of the new exhibits at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. HOF Executive Director Rick Walls is in the studio with Mark Heyne to talk about the autograph exhibition, and the salute to Joe Morgan display that will culminate in the unveiling of the Joe Morgan statue on Crosley Terrace later this season.

Reds release details for Opening Day

Manager of Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Joe Torre will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Reds opening day, on Monday.  In a release, the team announced the gates will open three hours before game time at 1:10 PM. 

Earlier the Reds Community Fund will sponsor a Charity Block Party on Joe Nuxhall Way and Freedom Way.  That starts at 11:00 AM.

Why ticket campout has become a tradition for many Reds fans

Dozens of Reds fans started lining up for Opening Day tickets Friday morning.

Pitching a tent in front of Great American Ball Park.  Braving the cold night ahead.  Reds fans who do this swear by, not at, the annual ritual for a number of reasons.  Dozens of them started lining up at 9 Friday morning for a shot at the 1,500 Opening Day tickets that go on sale Saturday morning at 9.  

Camaraderie seems to be one of the biggest reasons.  Everyone pulls together and behaves themselves.

"You come down, you make friends with people and you watch each other's backs and stand in line," said Jeff King of Florence, a 10-year veteran of the campout.

Last year The Cincinnati Reds won 97 games and were the National League Central Division champions. But the team went on to give up a two-game series lead in the playoffs to lose to the Giants.
