Reds' Chapman recovering from surgery, could be released from hospital this weekend

Aroldis Chapman, the Reds' left-handed closer struck in the face by a batted ball Wednesday night, had surgery Thursday  at a Phoenix hospital to have a small titanium plate inserted over his left eye, where the bone was fractured.

Rob Butcher, the Reds' director of media relations, said in a press release that Chapman is "expected to remain in the hospital a day or so."

The two-and-a-half hour surgery was performed by cranial facial plastic surgeon Dr. Ed Joganic at Banner Good Samarian Hospital in Phoenix.

Today is the first day of spring.

Yes, it is. Don’t let the piles of rock-hard snow lining the streets and clogging up your yard fool you. Don’t be deceived by the slushy white stuff that is supposed to fall from the sky today.

Today, at the Cincinnati Reds’ training camp in the suburban desert that is Goodyear, Arizona, the Reds pitchers and catchers report for duty. Some have been there for days, anxious for another season of baseball to begin.

Some will tell you that you are crazy; that spring officially begins on Thursday, March 20 – the vernal equinox.

Cincinnati Reds: Spring Training Update

Spring training for the Cincinnati Reds is fully underway in Goodyear, Arizona so it’s time to get a sense of the 2013 season from Fox 19 Sports Director Brian Giesenschlag. He just returned from Goodyear, so he’s in The Front Row with Betsy Ross with some thoughts on the coming year, and the two main stories from this year’s spring training: moving Aroldis Chapman to the starting rotation and the addition of Shin Soo Choo as the leadoff hitter.
